11歳のかりんは父親に捨てられ、田舎にある祖父の寺に預けられる。孫を育てることになった祖父は、少々気まぐれだが陽気で親切な化け猫のあんずに孫の世話を頼む。しかし個性の強い2人の間には火花が散ることに... やがてかりんの亡き母を探しに、死後の世界へと向かう友情の始まりが訪れる。
